Breathfine

Sleep breathing exercise

The slowest pattern here, for the edge of sleep.

The pattern

Sleep: 4-2-8-2 breathing, 10 minutes
Inhale4 seconds
Hold2 seconds
Exhale8 seconds
Sustain2 seconds

Technique: Slow breathing with a doubled exhale.

When to use it

You are lying awake with your mind going, or you have just got into bed and want to slow down before sleep arrives.

How to do it

Practise lying on your back or your side. Breathe through your nose. Let the belly rise rather than the chest, and make the out-breath long and quiet, as though fogging a window very slowly.

What it feels like

Heavy and slightly drowsy. The count often starts to blur after a few minutes, which is a sign to let it go rather than hold on.

Why this pattern

The exhale is twice the inhale, which makes the cycle long and undemanding. Practise lying down, and let the counting fade if you start drifting off. That is the point.

What the evidence suggests

Common mistakes

Counting rigidly to stay awake, and forcing the eight-second exhale until it strains. If the exhale feels long, shorten it to six.

Who should skip it

If lying flat makes breathing uncomfortable, sit propped up instead.

How long before it helps?

Most people notice the body settling within two or three minutes. Falling asleep is not the goal of the exercise, so treat sleep as a side effect rather than a target.

Should I stop when the timer ends?

No. If you are drifting, let the session run out and stay where you are.

Desktop

  1. In Chrome or Edge, look for the install icon at the right of the address bar.

Installing needs the app to be opened from a web address (https). If you are opening the file directly from your downloads, it still runs perfectly and still works offline. It just cannot be added to the home screen that way.

Privacy policy

Short version: Breathfine collects nothing and sends nothing anywhere.

What we collect

There is no account here, no sign-up, and we never ask for your name, email address or phone number.

We do use analytics to understand how many people use Breathfine and which practices they choose: Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager and the Meta (Facebook) pixel. Through these, the following may be collected: your IP address, device and browser type, approximate location (usually city level), which screens you open, and when you start, restart or complete a session along with which practice it was. These services set cookies and similar identifiers, and Meta may connect this activity to your Facebook or Instagram account if you have one.

We never send the contents of your practice history, and there is nothing identifying you personally for us to send.

Your choices

You can block all of this: use your browser's cookie and tracking-protection settings, a content blocker, or Google's official Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. Meta's ad preferences let you limit how your activity is used. Blocking any of it leaves every breathing feature working exactly as it does now.

What is stored on your device

Your practice statistics (sessions completed, minutes breathed, your most-used practice and the date of your last session) and your settings (sound, ambience and volume, animation, reduced motion, default session length) are saved in your browser's local storage. That data never leaves your device, and we cannot see it. Separately, the analytics services described above store their own cookies and identifiers in your browser.

Deleting your data

Use Clear history under Your Practice on the home screen, or clear this site's data in your browser settings. Both remove everything immediately and permanently.

Network and audio

Apart from the analytics services above, the app requests nothing from the network. Every practice, screen and sound is already on your device. All sounds, including the ambience, the phase chimes and the completion tone, are generated by your browser as you listen. No audio is downloaded or streamed, and your sessions run normally with no internet connection at all.

Children

Breathfine is a general-wellness tool and is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will appear on this screen.

If you have a heart or lung condition, are pregnant, have a history of fainting, panic attacks or seizures, or are under a doctor's care, please speak to them before starting any breathing practice.

Use it sensibly

Stop immediately if you feel dizzy, faint, breathless or uncomfortable. Never force your breath, never practise prolonged breath holding, and skip the holds in any pattern if they feel wrong for you. Do not use Breathfine while driving, cycling, operating machinery, or in water. You use it at your own risk.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we accept no liability for any loss or harm arising from its use.

Your data

Your statistics and settings live only in your browser. Clearing your browser data, using a different device or switching to private browsing will remove them. We hold no backup and cannot restore anything.
